Buddhism in Action for Peace
Soka Gakkai International and SGI-UK– literally meaning ‘the international society for the creation of value.
Members follow the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, a Buddhist monk who was born in 1222 in Japan. After years of studying Buddhist sutras, he concluded that the answer to the sufferings of ordinary people lay in the teachings contained in Shakyamuni’s Lotus Sutra. He taught that chanting the phrase
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo enables people in the present age to attain the life-state of Buddhahood, which is characterised by courage, compassion and wisdom.
SGI’s President Daisaku Ikeda has travelled the world building bridges between people through dialogue and cultural exchange.
Through the belief and practice of Nichiren Buddhism, practitioners strive to respect that which is of ultimate value: life itself. Our desire is to contribute to the positive transformation of society as engaged citizens.
Through their Buddhist faith, practice and study members of SGI-UK transform their inner lives and strive to develop the qualities needed to bring about personal fulfilment and contribute to the positive development of society.
SGI-UK is one of 90 national SGI organisations around the world. Our motto is ‘Trust through Friendship, Peace through Trust’. We aim to foster these humanistic principles through open meetings, in particular through our monthly local discussion meetings.
